The Boat

"The Cecelia Ann" is a 60ft wooden built Ketch, designed and built by it owner, who has 12 years marine experience and is qualified Master, based on an American Cruising Ketch design. Modifications to the hull design were made to allow for more room in the interiors and greater deck utilization, also providing greater stability for a more comfortable ride.

The "Cecelia Ann" was built in Ujung Genting, West Java from 2000 to 2002 from Bungur, a tropical hard wood native to Indonesia and renowned for it's suitability for boat building. The vessel was built using traditional Indonesian building techniques by Bpk. Abbas of Ujung Genteng. The Cecelia Ann was launched in May 2002.
After sea trials the boat was relocated to Pelabuhan Ratu where it was moored for 6 months while being rigged for sailing. Once all the rigging was finished the boat was relocated to Anyer, Banten where the interior fit outs were completed.

The "Cecelia Ann" is now based in the Villa Marina Village Marina, Anyer, which gives the vessel excellent access to all the wonders of the Western Sunda Straits.

The Sunda Straits The Sunda Straits, the historic water way separating Java from Sumatra, is bordered by the Thousand Islands to the east and Ujung Kulon National park on the west. These waters still today contain some of the most pristine areas left in Java. The western entrance to the straits remains the most un-spoilt part of this water way. Located far enough from Jakarta to not be affected by the pollution of the city, but close enough to be easily accessible by road, this part of the Sunda Straits offer some of the regions premier eco-tourism destinations, such as Krakatau Volcano, Ujung Kulon National Park and Tanjung Lesung, and provides excellent scuba diving, trekking, and beaches. The best way to access the many islands and wilderness areas of the western straits is on board the 60ft sailing ketch "Cecelia Ann"

These islands offer a range of activities from climbing the active cone of Anak Krakatau volcano to beach combing the deserted white beaches of Sibuku and Lagundi. They also offer a wide range of diving including wrecks, walls and coral reefs.

The Western Sunda Straits offers a wide variety of excellent diving experiences and the "Cecelia Ann" is well equipped with both diving equipment and diving experience to act as the perfect diving platform to allow you to explore these dive sites. The unique geography of the area means it can offer every thing from well preserved coral reefs to volcanic pinnacles and deep wall diving. Apart from the natural history, the human history also contributes to several excellent wreck dives as well, including the historic HMAS Perth and USS Houston, two Battle Cruisers sunk in the Battle of the Sunda Straits, on the 28th February 1942. The wide range and variety of diving opportunities in the area also means there is something to offer all divers, no matter what your level or experience.

HMAS Perth and USS Houston These two wrecks, located not more than three miles apart are well preserved World War Two Battle Cruisers. Exploring the decks of these two great ships, discovering their gun turrets and seeing the damage inflicted on them by the vastly superior Japanese forces they engaged, is a challenging and rewarding dive. Due to the depth of the wrecks, strong currents and low visibility that can prevail in the area, divers intending to dive these wrecks should be experienced.

Sanyang Island
This marine reserve offers a great range of hard and soft coral gardens. Located in the narrowest part of the straights, strong current sweep down the sides of the island bring rich nutrients that support a wonder land of marine life, including pelagic fish, turtles, etc. At the back of the island there are some caves in the cliffs that offer some exciting diving.

Sibuku Island
Sibuku offers a great range of diving from well preserved hard coral fringing reefs, to deep water volcanic pinnacles, and even a WWII wreck to complete its portfolio of diving adventures.
The wreck at Sibuku is an excellent dive for beginners, as it lies in water ranging from 1.5meters to 22 meters, with the bulk of the wreck in only 7 to 8 meters. The wreck which was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during WWII tried to beach itself, but hit the fringing reef and broke in on the steep slope of the reef. Therefore, a dive here offers a great combination of reef and wreck diving.

Also the many headlands around Sibuku offer some great offshore reef dives. These are usually between 15 and 20m. These reefs are mainly soft coral reefs with clumps of hard corals. Marine life includes lobsters, groupers, small snappers, coral trout, and parrot fish.
About 2 Nautical Miles off the coast of Sibuku are a group of Pinnacles rising out of 35 meters of water. These Pinnacles are a magnet to marine life offering everything from Moray eels to large Groupers, Barramundi Cod, Trevallies, Coral Trout, Lion Fish, etc. However, this area is prone to strong currents, and therefore diving these pinnacles should be left to experienced divers only.
Krakatau Group:
The still very active volcanic activity makes diving in this are unique. Deep walls dropping down to 50m, rich nutrients from the volcanic ash and clear waters combine to make some of the best diving in the region, in the right conditions. Early in the year (February to May usually gives the best visibility) offers some of the best diving. Around Anak Krakatau there is an interesting combination of developed hard coral reefs interspersed with newer lava flows which are raw landscapes with only the first signs of life beginning to appear.
On Rakarta there are some fantastic wall dives that drop strait down from the shore line, where at 30meters you can look up as see the jungle overhanging above you. Pulau Pangang and Rakarta offer some well preserved hard coral reefs offer a wide variety of marine life including pelagic's and turtles. The area also offers some lava caves in the deeper water. In these caves you occasionally find Giant Grouper and Large Snappers.

Ujung Kulon
Offers a wide rang of reef diving. Depths here range from 8 meter to 15 meters. Most dives are on fringing reefs as well as some shallower pinnacle dives. The reefs around the park are well preserved offering spectacular coral formations and rich diversity of tropical reef life. This area is ideal for the beginner or less experienced divers, with some more challenging drift dives for the more experienced.

Ujung Kulon and the South Western Straits

At the South Western end of the Sunda Straits lies Ujung Kulon National Park. Ujung Kulon National Park protects one of the last extensive remaining areas of lowland rain forest in Java and is of special importance for the conservation of Javan rhinoceros. In addition, the coastal coral reef environment ranks among the richest in Indonesia.
The point to point ocean boundary encloses Ujung Kulon Peninsula and the offshore islands of Pulau Handeuleum and Pulau Peucang, whilst the island of Pulau Panaitan is separated by the 10km wide Panaitan Straits. The eastern boundary follows contours along the eastern foothills of the Gunung Honje massif.
Pulau Panaitan/Pulau Peucang Nature Reserve was established in 1937, Ujung Kulon Nature Reserve in 1958 and Gunung Honje Nature Reserve established in 1967. In 1980, the nature reserves of Ujung Kulon Peninsula, Panaitan Island, South Gunung Honje, North Gunung Honje and the Krakatau Islands were declared a Proposed National Park. On 1 February, 1992, the Proposed Ujung Kulon National Park complex was declared a World Heritage Site following inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1991.
